Emo revivalists Joyce Manor share the soundtrack of their tour

One of the most heartening aspects of the ongoing emo revival is that most of the bands taking part in it seem to have not only inherited the sound of the genre’s ’90s-era second wave but the heavy streak of egalitarianism that was one of its primary non-musical qualities. That being said, Torrance, Calif.’s Joyce Manor enjoy something of a “first among equals” position, with a fan base that’s quickly growing to legitimate rock star size, a surprising amount of mainstream media attention, and a new album, Never Hungover Again, on the famed punk label Epitaph.

Never Hungover Again combines the earnestly awkward adolescent squawk of emo foundation-layers Cap’n Jazz with Cali pop-punk’s buzzsaw hooks, but on this exclusive playlist for EW, the band shows off some impressively diverse listening habits. Collecting some of the music that they’ve had in heavy rotation while on tour, it includes everything from ska-core heroes Operation Ivy to the Cocteau Twins’ gothy dream-pop.

Thought I should start it off with a high energy number and few songs get me pumped quite like this gem.

Toys That Kill – Maybe This Cult Is Way Off

Love the half time chorus right after the regular chorus. Best band of all time.

Operation Ivy – Bad Town

How has Tim Armstrong sounded exactly the same since he was a teenager? Truly a natural and an original.

Red Hot Chili Peppers – Dosed

Despite liking the single off this record I never checked out any deep cuts. Big mistake because this is a great song.

Ghetto Brothers – There is Something in My heart

A co-worker who plays almost exclusively garbage actually put this on while we were working together. Blew me away.

White Denim – A Place to Start

Not super into this record but this song is so good. Kinda has a Steely Dan vibe.

Thee Oh Sees – The Lens

Love the shameless Beatles rip. Cool how haunted and detached this song feels.

Lenguas Largas – Come On In

Never heard anything like this. This band couldn’t be from anywhere else in the world other than Tucson.

Ovens -Bad Day

First Ovens track I ever heard and I’ve been hooked ever since.

Yo La Tengo – You Can Have It All

Take it baby.

Xiu Xiu – Honeysuckle

Xiu Xiu are my favorite band and this is from my favorite record of theirs. Xiu Xiu for life.

Cocteau Twins – Evangeline

Impossibly beautiful song from this miracle of a band. Why do bands that aren’t Scottish even bother trying to make pop?

Flashlights – Blue Dream

The scene in Orlando is really cool and this is one of my favorite bands from it. Shout out to Ian, Dylan, Joe, and Julio.

Hard Skin – Council Estate

Re-recorded versions of their album On The Balls with different female vocalists called Why do Birds Suddenly Appear? Genius.
